update on tankicon maker and problem 

the above method works however , if you make your icons in tank icon maker as normal then do this:-

1. dont select save icons to folder but do select save atlas (you dont need anything else)

2.you will see this error but ignore it everything is ok.

3.  when you check your selected output folder you will see two new files have been created , i personal use left and right icons so i rename both files to

battleAtlesL  as this set of icons will be used for  the friendly team , now load the .png file into paint.net and then save it back out as .dds file (just select default settings for the dds format)

you can now use these two files for your battleatlas no need to do anything else

my res_mods/gui/flash/atlases directory looks like this :-
