So just before I was due to go to work friday evening around about 16.30 , i smelled burning and my PC just shut down without warning ,time was not on my side but I had to open the PC up to see if i could see what was the cause.
My graphics card GTX960 was hot as hell , and my heatsink over the CPU was boiling , however the smell of burning was coming from the heatsink, anyway i had to go to work , as you can imagine i only had one thing on my mind all evening. well i came home and decided i had to start to strip out items , i knew the heatsink was smelling so took it and the fan off and found the vents were clogged up with dust and shit ,also no paste on the cpu-bottom of the sink ? i hoped that the damage was minimal and started to cancel out things that worked by swapping them into my other pc,power pack was ok , memory was ok , gcard was ok, ssd drive was ok.
which left the motherboard and cpu , the board was one of those micro tiny little feckers that i never really liked anyway and was debating if i should upgrade it around may time , some of you may remember at the time?
now i know things are cheaper if you shop online etc. but i didnt want to wait so had to opt for a shop bought combo , Maplins is the nearest big store that would sell these type of items so i checked online to see what they had in stock ,last night i decided to go for this:

but when i got to the shop i thought feck it and went for a better spec,
Battle Hard i5-6400 CPU 4GB RAM Gold Motherboard & Processor Bundle (£329)
I also grabbed 2x 8GB of DDR4 vengence clockspeed 2400mhz.
came to 2p short of £400
oh if my missus knew the truth ,lol
i know there were even higher spec bundles available but i had to draw a line somewhere.
Now came the biggie , i had never swapped out a motherboard before ,so i read,re read and plunged in ……20 mins later everything working as it should tada!!!
but I have a few questions that i am not sure about,
1. there are four slots for ram 1a+2a 1b+2b ,i put both sticks in slot 1a and 1b , but was wondering could i use the 4 gb stick that came with the bundle?
the manual seems to imply its possible to have different size sticks , if so what would the order be to install them? recap 2x8gb 1x 4gb all the same make and models.
2. the motherboard comes with onboard hdmi graphics ,there is an hdmi port at the back that works i tested it , do i have to disable onboard graphics? if so how ?
3. I have a samsung 27inch curve monitor that i connect to my graphics card through the display port, when my pc boots the monitor doesnt become active until the login screen appears , so i cant stop the boot process and get into the bios , there is a ASUS utillity that came on disk with the bundle that is for accessing the bios on rebot , but my monitor does not initiate until windows loads ?
any help with the three above problems please ?
Ahh at last someone has met my PC specs.
Yet it still fails.
I dont want to bore you all with Specs.
i am not a pro, but on my pc i can use only 1×4,2 x 4, 4×4, ..1×8,2×8, 4×8 Ram…..etc
and you dont must disable onboard graphic, install the newest monitor driver ( normaly windows do this auromaticly), or make search for new hardware ,sorry for my bad english, i cant better write this
this is what manual says ref memory so still not clear , forums say maybe maybe not ? lol
ref graphics , newer motherboards oir win10 will auto detect when a gcard is present and switch off onboard graphics automatic.
ref bios , i plugged hdmi lead from gcard into living room tv and left display port to my monitor ,i selected duplicate displays and rebooted,
whole boot sequence is visable through the hdmi lead on tv but monitor only initiates when windows loads , i was able to explore the bios on my tv
The RAM slots will be colour coded – if you have 2 sticks you need to use slot 1 and slot 3 – they will be the same colour.
IF you new 4gb is not EXACTLY the same spec/speed as the 8gb, I would stick with using only the 8GB – otherwise if you use all three they will all run at the speed of the slowest stick.
I also only use Asus boards and usually the boot menu key is F8 – alternatively try F5

corsair ddr4 vengeance 2400mhz i made sure i bought the two x8 gig sticks exact same ,you are correct about slot colour slot 1 and 3 are grey 2 and 4 are black ,
so i put the 8’s in slot 1 and 3 and where for the 4gig ? 2 or 4 ?
also why is my monitor not waking up until windows loads to login screen ? tv wakes up on boot screen via hdmi , monitor via display port does not.
side note , world of tanks with xvm running 120 fps on medium settings ????? whooottt!!!! and its ahh so quiet as well

I wouldnt bother using two sets of ram, just use one pair, unless they are matched (as they are two different sizes they wont be) ur PC will only run as fast as the slowest ram, I reckon the 4gb would cause a slow-down.
In the bios, is the graphics card set as the main device ? eg PCI not hdmi. (I have 3 PCI slots, so PCI E 1 is my boot device)
Memory should be put into the slot closest to the CPU (in pairs or triples in my case) so 1a and 1b would be my choice (if 1 is the closest) mine is 1,3,5 not 2,4,6
So, the good news — you got an Asus Z170 which is exactly the platform i have. The Intel CPU architecture supports 1, 2 or 4 DIMMs, but the number is also dependent on the type of DIMM your 2400’s are supported in the 1,2,4 configuration. Sticks 1 and 2 go into slots A2 and B2 first, DIMMs 3 and 4 go into A1 and B1 last. There is no support for a 3 DIMM configuration.
On the booting screen issue — I *think* the MB is designed to only POST to the VGA/HDMI ports; an display port would require a driver to load and hence would make sense why you dont see anything until the Windows boot screen.
Also, remember to install your GTX960 into the PCIe16x slot *closest* to the CPU. This is a non-shared slot and will give you a full channel to the card.
I am running a new GTX970 and hitting 120fps at full max on all selections. Its a nice setup for sure.
you might price out that 2nd stick of 4gb memory to another matched set of 8’s — the price difference might not be that bad (I went with a full 32gb when I did my Z170 upgrade — love it).
Not sure on the POST to the dp — that would have to be a function of the graphics card masquerading the dp as a VGA port — POST is meant to go to the lowest common denominator and that is VGA. Maybe there is a graphics card switch?
And yeah, I maintain a full 120 fps throughout an entire battle now with teh 970 –its awesome. Every now and then I have to reboot the PC as dirty code loads up the GPU memory — but I can live with that.
Oh, something to be aware of. When I replaced my MB I was running Win8.1 and Windows got REALLY flakey. I chalked it up to the HW change and windows just not dealing with it correctly, so I did a clean install of Win10. Im not sure how Win10 will behave so keep an eye out. Its one reason I separate my USER folder to the D: drive rather than keeping it all on C: — it makes upgrades/updates/clean installs much easier.

For the ram you must not use 1a 1b in dual channel then jam in a third one that will only mess up the ram controller if you want tondoothat all 4 slots need to be used its or dual channel or none imho
If your boot skips bios info you have to plug into the mobo hdmi port and set the priority vga device.
Its not needed to disable the integrated gpu when you plug in the discrete one the integrated 1 will not be used
Clean your pc with a compressed aircan now and then you dont want it roasted again
Also – before you buy any more RAM check out Newegg in the USA – I got these babies to match my originals – was £25 cheaper than anywhere I could source in the UK

Nice fps BTW – I throttle mine through my Catalyst driver to 60fps as I find anything higher is redundant
